I love these words by Kandinsky: "Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul."
"Rhythm is something you either have or don't have, but when you have it, you have it all over."--Elvis Presley I worked today on another cubism influenced portrait. I used as my reference material a series of photos of Sloane Lenz taken by Michael Lenz. By overlapping elements from each shot, I was able to achieve a desirable composition. While I was fairly satisfied with the composition, I noted that the lines as they intersected were too dense, and everything became confused, especially near the center of the canvas. But as I added color, everything made more sense. My goal was to create a series of subtle movements--a swinging foot, recrossed legs, shifting gesture of the upper body, etc. And I was pleased that the manipulation of the images resulted in three overlapping crosses on the wall behind the main subject, and turned the abstract painting on the wall (which happens to be by Carolyn Ellis) into a cubist piece itself. (I must admit, I do love a painting within a painting.) Another part that appealed to me was the fact that the subject seemed to become more "involved" with the book. At one point her face is even on the back cover of the book! I noted also that the subject is either ascending or descending, depending on which way the viewer reads the movement. Just a bit of fine-tuning remains. Meanwhile I am going to try this process again, utilizing the images in this slide show below: Of course, it was the movement of the dance that first drew my attention, but the focus of this piece will on color and its emotional impact.
